4. Crop News
Such a dry September and then wham......., suddenly we are into the depths of autumn. We started doing our main potato harvest, but the soil was so dry that the potatoes were being scored as they came up the harvester, so we abandoned it until we had a bit of rain... maybe a mistake as now the rain is not stopping!
We had a successful day on the first Saturday in October harvesting carrots. We had over 20 members of Exeter Community Agriculture here to help with the harvest. Many hands make light work and we harvested over half the crop. The deal being that we grow some extra rows of carrots for them and they harvest their crop and help us with ours. It was a very sociable way to do what can be a time consuming and laborious job on our own.
The chickens have slowed down their egg-laying partly because of the time of year and partly because of 'red mite'. These are spread by wild birds and find their way to most flocks of chickens at some point. Fortunately they were spotted early and we spread very fine inert, clay like dust called 'diatomaceous earth' throughout both houses. The little blighters cannot survive the fine dust particles!
Unfortunately the price of our eggs will rise to £1.60 per 6 as of 1st November 2009.
Other News
We now sell our fresh organic produce at the Exeter Market each Thursday. You will find us on the last stall on South Street with lots of colourful photographs of the farm and a banner displaying Shillingford Organics, along with a selection of our sensational produce.
Tom Lowday, who works with us on the farm, also runs the stall, so if you are passing why not pop by and say hello to him, he loves meeting people and is quite a character!
Tom played a major role in setting up the stall, so we applaud you for that Tom and keep up the good work.
