Educational Visits at the Barton

Shillingford Organics is part of Natural England's Countryide Stewardship scheme and through this offers free educational visits to the farm. Visits are led by the farm's education officers Kevin and Jo Cotter from Love Local Food who have a wide experience of working on farms with groups of all ages and sizes!

Visits can be an introduction to the whole farm or focus on a specific aspect. Seed planting, feeding the chickens, harvesting the beans, grinding the grain are all possible activities. We can also cook soups and breads from the produce you harvest.

Farm visits can be tailored to meet your needs. Talk to us and we can develop stimulating and relevant experiences for your group.

Regular Educational Visits taking place at The Barton, Shillingford Abbot

Educational visit funding element of Countryside Stewardship has opened up the possibility of giving regular access to the farm to groups who would otherwise find it hard or indeed impossible to visit The Barton. We are working successfully with the social enterprise Love Local Food to build long term sustainable links with a wide range of groups and individuals within the city. We feel very strongly that farm visits should allow people to see change and develop a relationship with the farm and not just be a one off experience.

School2farm

This continues the successful series of visits with St Davids Primary School. The school is in the cnetre of Exeter with no direct access to green open space and a very limited growing area. The school2farm enables the youngest children 4-7 year olds to visit in four groups of 12-15 children 5 times a year. Each block of visits takes a different theme as the seasons change and engages the children in farm exploration and growing tasks.

Food, Families and Farms Project

This is a partnership project with Shillingford Organics and Love Local Food. We are working with an increasing range of family groups within the city of Exeter working alongside Sure Start Children's Centres. Each group makes regular visits out to the farm engaging with seasonal crops and which are then followed up by with cooking the vegetables back at their centre. Currently we are working with three children's centres and hoping to extend over the year to engage with all children's centres in Exeter.

Family Farm Saturdays

This is a new project in partnership with Love Local Food which is focused on giving regular monthly access to the farm to families and members of the community and increasing their understanding of seasonal change and local produce. Visits will be themed according to what is happening at the farm.
